I missed last weeks match against UC Pumas, but Froudy did a wonderful job describing the action.
As he says :
“It was a game of two halves as most games are. We won the first half 4-0 and played some good football to boot. The second half started in much the same fashion but towards the end of the game we fell away with the score line for that half finishing 3-3, . Ken Menser showed his fondness for playing up front and bagged a hat trick while Bill Hardie, Wally Conlon, Perry Jolley and Col Tulley also got on the score sheet. All in all a sound performance. Nobody got too stirred up and we all had an enjoyable game. Next week Alan Froud, Alan Greenslade, Wally Conlon and Paul Carter are unavailable so we look forward to welcoming back, Valery, Ange, Ash and Chris”.
So a nice little 7-3 win, but if you thought last week was an impressive result, how about this weeks scoreline?
Not sure I have the right words to describe today’s match at Kambah, when the Old Boys ran riot against Belconnen United. We settled quickly, began to dominate possession and went in front within five minutes, which soon became 2-0, 3-0, and then 4-0. Belconnen to their credit kept trying to play football through the midfield, however our back four easily dealt with their attack.
They had even more trouble containing our swift attack, as John Collett and Perry Jolley created the space that allowed Colin Tulley & Kenny Menser to exploit at will. We went in at half time 5-1 up, which in all honesty could have been 8-1 or even 9-1, if we had taken more of the chances we created. No disrespect to our gallant opponents, who kept fighting till the end, but it was a stroll in the park for us. In fact there were stages in the game, where we became rather complacent and allowed them a period of possession in the midfield.
Belconnen really started to tire in the later stages of the second half, and opened up even more space for Col Tulley to run into. Col managed to grab five for himself while Valery Kaladzinski bagged a hat-trick, and Kenny Menser “bent it like Beckham” from a 20 yard free kick.
I got our other goal, in the 10-1 win, but apparently that’s about all I did, let me explain…
Now, we all take it turns to take home & wash the Old Boys kit, and I put my hand up to do it this week. After the game, Kenny handed me the big black bag full of sweaty shirts, shorts and smelly socks, plus a plastic bag full of shirts that were not used this week, and thus didn’t need washing.
So I get home, empty out the black bag and start getting the kit into the washing machine. Trouble is I can’t find my usual No 4 shirt which I wore earlier in the day. Checked it several times, but still can’t find it. Now I’m thinking maybe I’m going nuts. “Did I take it off and throw it into the crowd after scoring? No, otherwise I would have been yellow carded. Or did I swap shirts with one of the Belconnen lads after the final whistle? Don’t think so.
Then I find it, and guess where it is? In the white bag amongst all the nice clean unused shirts!!!. Which got me thinking someone put it in that bag because it looked like it hadn’t been used at all. How humiliating! I guess I’ll have to move around a little more next week and work up a sweat, just to show my team mates I do exert some energy on a sunday morning.
A word on the FA Cup Final, which kept some of the Old Boys players up until the early hours, great game, really enjoyable and credit to both teams. Chelsea deserved to win, but Pompey played their part and could have nicked a goal themselves, if they had scored from that penalty. Chelsea remarkably hit the woodwork on five occasions in the first half, and missed a late penalty, but Drogba’s free kick after an hour was enough for the Blues to complete the League & Cup Double for the first time in their history.
I had predicted that Chelsea would either win 5-0 or Portsmouth would cause a shock and nick it 1-0, and although the score line wasn’t like that, the way the match was flowing it could so easily have finished up like one of those scenarios.
