The Old Boys may be top of the over 43’s table, but to be honest we have hit a rough bit of form at the wrong time.
We have only managed one point out of the last nine, drawing with Brindabella Blues A 1-1 on August 1. This was followed by a 3-0 defeat to Canberra FC, and a 1-0 loss to UC Pumas last weekend.
This morning we were due to play Belconnen in a game which apparently is a must win, because we need to grab six points in our last two games to ensure we finish top. Next week we go to Calwell to play Brindabella Blues B who are neck and neck with us in second place.
Just on the must win, scenario, our team mate Greg Stott, had the foresight to remind all the players about the purpose of playing football on s Sunday morning. Greg’s message was simple, we have nothing to prove. As he pointed out,
“Don’t focus on winning to the point you no longer enjoy playing football, we are top of the ladder, on merit as of this moment we are where we are on merit. If at the end of the season we are no longer on top or win the comp so what !!!
Very nicely put Greg, it needed saying. What is important is that we are a bunch of blokes who get together on a Sunday morning, to play for fun, win or lose. The enjoyment is in the playing, not necessarily the winning.
I did play in last weeks match, however my dodgy ankle is causing me such grief, I’ve decided to step down from the remaining games, regardless of whether we make it to the Grand Final on September 12.
Belconnen could only muster seven players for the match so we won 3-0 by forfeit, so a draw next week should us finish as minor premiers.
