My name is Ash Morgan, I’m originally from a town in the south of England called Romford. It’s really a Greater London suburb on the border of Essex.
I was born and grew up in our family home in a quiet suburban street called ‘The Ridgeway”, in Gidea Park, and had a very happy and loving up-bringing. Life with my Mum, Dad and elder sister Julie, in this little area of East London during the 60’s and 70’s was very, very special. Our wonderful Grandparents, neighbours, and lots of close friends helped make it so.
But in the mid 80’s life began to change somewhat. Following the breakup of my first marriage, my father Sid, was diagnosed with lung cancer and died within six weeks, leaving a huge void in the family, particularly for my Mum Maureen. My sister Julie had moved to Australia a couple of years earlier, and when Mum, decided to join her, I naturally found myself drawn to the place.
I do recall my thinking during those days back in the eighties, that I couldn’t get away from England fast enough. It might have had something to do with the mood of the country under Maggie Thatcher, I don’t know, but back then I really didn’t appreciate England that much.
Maybe I was looking through rose coloured glasses, but I did see Australia as the land of milk and honey, and the place where I was going to make it.
Having lived here now for over 20 years, I would say that to a large extent, this country has been fantastic for me, and far exceeded all expectations, however today, I have a much more level headed view of my homeland, and now see what a great country it is. I go back to the UK whenever I get the chance, and also make the most of traveling around those countries in Europe that I wouldn’t have gone to in a million years when I lived on that side of the world.
Prague for instance, has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I was there for 3-4 days just before Christmas 2006, and was blown away by its special vibe. I can still smell the Glühwein and the chestnuts cooking in the old square. Cold or what? but thats how Christmas should be.
Anyway, I have finally got around to creating my own wordpress blog, where I can express my views and thoughts to the outside world. I welcome your opinions and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
